Bajra Methi na Thepla (Pearl Millet/ Sajjala Thepla)

I’m sticking with the theme of the week, All about Millets and made these theplas with bajra flour (pearl millet flour) and methi. This year I planted only a few greens in my backyard because with the India trip I didn’t want the plants to suffer while we were away. I harvested most of them and gave some away to family and friends. I had half a pot of methi leaves that needed to be used up. I bookmarked this recipe from ‘India: The Cookbook’ by Pushpesh Pant. I borrowed this book from the library, but had to return it…

Cheela (Vegan Omelette) & Vegetable Upma

It is Spring break time for my son this week and making interesting meals for him has been a challenge for me. So I referred to the cookbook ‘India: The Cookbook’ by Pushpesh Pant and found this quick and easy Cheelas. I’ve always wanted to make these vegan omelettes, but never got around to make them. My son really liked them and gobbled up a couple with some ketchup. They taste the best when served hot out of the pan. Cheelas are basically besan (chickpea flour) dosas (crepes). They take about 15 minutes to make from start to finish. They…

Mor Rasam (Buttermilk Rasam)

This is one recipe that I have been wanting to make for quite some time now. When my yogurt-phobic husband is around, I usually stay away from yogurt based recipes. But when he’s traveling, I go all out making my favorite foods. On one such occasion when my husband was away, I made this mor rasam. Adding dal to with buttermilk to make rasam is new to me.It turned out delicious — goes perfect with some steamed rice. Recipe is from Chandra Padmanabhan’s Dakshin.

Dal Kootu (Poritha Kootu)

Dal is something that is made almost every other day in my household. Not just my home, but that is the case in almost every Indian households. Lentils form one of the main source of protein to vegetarians. I am always looking for new ways of making the same old pappu/ dal. My everyday dals are usually very simple like this tomato pappu or this palakura pappu. But occasionally I do make kootu where dal is cooked with vegetables and coconut-peppercorn masala paste. My mom learned it from a Tamil neighbor. Today’s recipe is from the cookbook, Dakshin by Chandra…

Apple Pie Smoothie

I make sure that I take a copy of ‘Chop Chop’magazine from my kid’s pediatrician’s office. It is a fun book with some very simple to make recipes and activity ideas for kids. My son loves to read this book cover to cover and really enjoys doing the word scramble and kid quizes. Today’s recipe is a simple smoothie from that book. I asked my son to pick a recipe that we can make together and this was something he thought he would like. He didn’t really care for the texture of oats in the smoothie and I tried to…

Vegan Gingerbread Cookies

For this holiday season, I bought ‘Vegan Cookies Invade your Cookie jar’ cookbook on Amazon. For the couple of days I was leafing through the book breaking my head to decide what to make first. My son came home from school yesterday and asked me if he could have a gingerbread cookie because he made a paper gingerbread boy in school and was wondering how it would actually taste. I knew right away that Gingerbread cookies would be first cookie to be made from my new cookbook. Luckily I had all the ingredients on hand. My son helped me with…

Stuffed Eggplant with Peanuts

Stuffed Baby Eggplants Curry with Peanuts

My love for eggplants is well known in my family and even among my blogging buddies (I’m sure at least 2 of them must be nodding their heads and thinking — eggplant recipe, AGAIN.. come on Pavani 🙂 But I can’t miss an opportunity to buy them and eat them. Last weekend I found cute little baby eggplants at the Indian grocery, they were the perfect size to make stuffed eggplants. I bought a few, of course. As I was leafing through Chandra Padmanabhan’s ‘Dakshin’, I found this easy stuffed eggplant recipe called ‘Sagalay’. This peanut stuffing was a variation…

Pistachio Rosewater Cupcakes and a First Birthday celebrations

This post has been due for over a month now. My daughter turned 1 last month and I wanted to share the pictures with you. But September was dedicated to ‘A-Z dishes from Andhra’ and with the other things that were going on in couldn’t post this earlier. It is better late than never, so here are with some pictures of my little one’s first birthday. Since it was a late Summer birthday I wanted a backyard party. We were lucky to have a perfect day weatherwise. I wanted to have a Minnie Mouse theme — just because I wanted…
