Ingredients

  • 8 Bread slices
  • 1 cup Dairy or Non-dairy Milk
  • ¼ cup Custard Powder or Cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • ¼ cup Unsalted Butter

Instructions

  • In a shallow wide plate or a pie pan; combine milk, custard powder, sugar and vanilla extract. Whisk until the sugar has dissolved and there are no lumps in the mixture.
  • Heat a nonstick griddle/ tawa on medium heat.
  • Dip a bread slice in the milk mixture making sure that the whole bread gets a good coating of the custard mixture. Flip and coat the second side as well. Do not leave the bread in the milk for too long, that might cause the bread to get too soggy.
  • Melt 1 tablespoon butter on the griddle and place the custard soaked bread in the pan. Cook for 2~3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  • Remove onto a plate and repeat the remaining bread. Serve hot with a drizzle of maple syrup and fresh fruit.

Notes

  • Any good quality sandwich bread will work for this French toast recipe. I like to use either white whole grain bread or honey whole wheat bread. But feel free to use your favorite. Gluten free bread would also work.
  • Any dairy or non-dairy milk will work. I recommend using either 2% or whole milk for the best taste. If using non-dairy, almond or oat milk are my favorite because they are creamier than other plant based milks.
  • Cornstarch can be used instead of custard powder.
  • Ground cardamom is a great substitute for vanilla if you want to add some Indian flavor.
  • Any leftover French toast can be wrapped tightly in plastic or aluminum foil and frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, either place it in the microwave or a toaster and make sure to heat it through. Enjoy right away.
