Cuisine: American
Servings: 6 roll

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Milk*
  • 2 tablespoons Custard powder
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 3 tablespoons Nutella
  • 2 tablespoons Cream Cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Jam
  • 6 Bread Slices*
  • 3 tablespoons Unsalted Butter, divided

Instructions

  • In a shallow plate or a pie pan, combine custard powder, milk, sugar and vanilla extract. Whisk until well combined. Set aside.
  • Roll the bread slices to flatten them a little using a rolling pin. Removing the edges is optional, I left them on mine. Spread the filling (s) of choice on the bottom quarter of the bread and roll it into a tight roll.
  • Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet on medium heat.
Dip the bread roll in milk mixture, roll it around so that it absorbs milk evenly, then place seam side down in the preheated skillet. Cook until all sides are evenly browned, about 2~3 minutes on medium flame.
Enjoy right away with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Notes

  • Feel free to use any variety you like. I prefer either white or whole wheat bread.
  • I recommend using 2% of whole milk to make the custard.
  • You can totally make this recipe with eggs. Simply whisk in 3 large eggs with ¼ cup of milk in the recipe.
  • Substitute custard powder with equal amount of cornstarch in the recipe. Add an extra splash of vanilla for flavor.
  • Roll the cooked Nutella roll ups in cinnamon sugar mixture for extra layer of sweetness and yumminess.
  • If you are in the mood to make your own fresh strawberry jam, then go for it.
  • If you want to make Vegan French Toast rolls, then use unsweetened oat or almond milk to make the custard. Use vegan butter like Earth Balance to cook the roll ups.
  • To make the roll ups ahead of time, spread the filling and make them the night before. Then in the morning, simply dip them in custard and cook till golden brown.
