    About the Recipe

I love street food and I also love recreating those recipes right at home. Some of my favorite Indian street foods are ragda pattice or this Andhra pidatha kinda pappu.

Today I have an Indian street food that is spicy, crunchy and very addictive made using raw or unripe mango. Summer equals delicious fresh mangoes to me and this Indian raw mango salad is a great treat to enjoy in the warm weather.

This recipe is inspired from a chaat that we ate at Chai Pani restaurant in Asheville, North Carolina. They serve amazing Indian street food, probably the best I have eaten outside of India.

Wooden bowl with raw mango and corn flakes salad

Their mango chaat tastes phenomenal and I absolutely loved it. So I came back home and recreated this dish. I think I did a good job at it, if I can say so myself.

This raw mango chat has everything that you crave for - crunch, tang, sweet, spice and salty. Homemade or store bought green chutney acts as a salad dressing and brings all the flavors together and balances them beautifully.

Try this addicting and delicious recipe, I am sure you will LOVE it as much as we do.

    Instructions

For the detailed instructions on how to make the recipe with exact timings, check the printable recipe card below.

Most of the ingredients you need for this green mango chaat recipe are pantry friendly ingredients.

    • raw green mango - peeled, seeded and diced. If you can't find unripe mango and only have ripe ones - then choose one that is firm to touch. It may not be as tangy as the green one but it will still be tasty.
    • corn flakes - breakfast cereal is perfect to use here. But if you want to take the traditional route, then you can deep fry the dried corn flakes sold in Indian grocery stores.
    • red onion
    • chopped roasted peanuts
    • raisins
    • salt
    • green chutney - homemade or store-bought
    • salt
    • cilantro and lime juice
Ingredients needed - details in recipe card

    Instructions

For the detailed instructions on how to make the recipe with exact timings, check the printable recipe card below.

As I mentioned before, this mango chaat is a no-cook recipe unless you decide to fry your corn flakes. Here's how to make this easy recipe:

In a medium size bowl, combine the chopped mango, onions, peanuts, raisins, lime juice, green chutney, and salt. Mix well, taste and adjust the seasoning by adding more salt or green chutney or lime juice. This can be made 1 hour in advance.

Just before serving, add the corn flakes and chopped cilantro. Toss well and serve immediately!!

    Expert Tips

    • If you can't find unripe mango and only have ripe ones - then choose one that is firm to touch. It may not be as tangy as the green one but it will still be tasty.
    • Alternatively, make this recipe with tart green apple instead. It will not be a green mango salad, of course, but it will be delicious.
    • If using dried corn flakes from Indian grocery, deep fry them in hot oil until they are puffed and crispy. Drain on a paper towel lined plate and follow the recipe as written.
    • Make sure to add the corn flakes just before serving to ensure that they are crisp and not soggy.
    • Feel free to use any of your other favorite cereal instead of cornflakes. My other favorites are raisin bran and muesli.
    • The mango-veggie mixture can be made up to 1 hour in advance. Toss in the corn flakes just before serving.
    • Balance of flavors is the key - so make sure you taste and adjust the lime juice, salt and green chutney as needed to suit your taste buds.

Love these small joints Pavani. They always serve amazing food. We found a similar one in LA during our cruise trip called Appu's cafe. Great you recreated that recipe. Love the idea of crunchy corn flakes with mango.

We get sliced mangoes every where now as it in full season. We usually go for sliced mangoes with red chill powder. The mango chat looks awesome and I am sure it would be a super hit at home. Adding the corn flakes adds a nice crisp in the chat.
