    About the recipe

Raita is a yogurt based accompaniment/ condiment that is a part of almost every Indian meal. It acts as a contrast to hot and spicy dishes and also soothes the digestive tract.

Raitas are very versatile. Though onion and cucumber are the most common varieties, you can use any vegetable, fruit, legume or herb to make raita.

Here I have a simple recipe for raita sauce using avocado, yogurt and some spices. This is a basic recipe that can be easily jazzed up. Check out the 'Expert Tips' section for more ideas.

Recipe is adapted from 'My Indian Kitchen' cookbook by Hari Nayak. This is a great dish to serve with pulao/ biryani or flatbread or just plain rice. It is also perfect to eat as is.

    Ingredients

For the details of the exact quantities of each ingredient and the list of ingredients needed, check the printable recipe card below.

Here are the ingredients you need to make this easy raita recipe:

    • Avocado - to choose avocado, squeeze it gently and it should be slightly firm and not overly soft or mushy. Also check under the stem or cap at the top. The area underneath it should be green. If it is brown then it is overripe and best to avoid.
    • Plain yogurt - you can use either store-bought or homemade yogurt. I love using Greek yogurt because it is tangy and creamy.
    • Lemon/ lime juice
    • Cilantro
    • Ground cumin, salt and pepper.
Ingredients needed, details in recipe card.

    Instructions

For the detailed instructions on how to make the recipe with exact timings, check the printable recipe card below.

Never thought about raita with avocado. Must try it sometime. I don't like plain yogurt but love raitas and that my way of eating yogurt. I am always looking for new raita ideas.
